Resistance Welding Services

Sometimes traditional welding methods are not the best option for an application. Clamps get in the way, parts are designed with restricted access, or filler material is not allowed. These are all things resistance welding can overcome.  Make parts effectively with high-value resistance welding services from Superior Joining Technologies, Inc. (SJTI). As an electric resistance welding company, we provide services for clients across a range of industries, we specialize in pressure-and-heat-applied welding solutions for critical applications.

What Is Meant By Resistance Welding?

Resistance welding is the joining of metals by applying pressure and passing current for a length of time through the joined metal area. The key advantage of resistance welding is that no other materials are needed to create the bond. A fast and cost-effective welding process, resistance welding offers a variety of benefits such as:

  • Ability to weld .010”-.125 thick materials
  • High welding speed
  • Automated
  • Similar and dissimilar metals are capable of being welded
  • High production rate
  • Environmentally friendly
  • No need for filler metal, flux, and shielding gases

While an excellent way to create a robust and durable bond without relying on a separate welding material, resistance welding has a unique set of challenges. Inexperienced or untrained operators can cause splattering, indented surfaces, cracks in the weld area, asymmetry issues, and expulsion of metal near the weld site. Those issues can result in flaws or defects that degrade finished product performance.

When partnering with SJTI, these issues are of no concern. Our experienced and highly skilled welders’ dedication to craftsmanship, flexibility, and quality is unmatched, and they enable SJTI to take on jobs few others can do. Backing them is a knowledgeable inspection crew.

The SJTI Advantage

As an electric resistance welding company, our team of experienced and highly skilled welders and technicians perform precision resistance welding on a range of applications. Our methods include circumferential seam welding and resistance spot welding.

 Circumferential Welding Explained

Circumferential seam welding, which is also called resistance seam welding, is a process that joins two or more members of an assembly in a lap-joint configuration by producing a series of overlapping resistance spots. It can be used on circumferential and cylindrical applications as well as flat assemblies. This welding process can be paired with SJTI’s rolling processes, which helps streamline supply chains by reducing transit among service providers. Our system is most suited for use on stainless steel assemblies, and technicians perform welding in compliance with AWS D17.2.

Resistance Spot Welding Explained

Resistance spot welding, or just spot welding, is a cost-effective joining technology that’s ideal for applications that require high reproducibility and automation. Our system is perfect for carbon and stainless steel, and welding is performed in compliance with AWS D17.2. In this process, sheets are pressed together locally with the help of fitted copper electrode welding guns that then have a current applied to them. Localized heating melts the joining partners at the junction, resulting in a cohesive composite once solidified.

Quality Comes First

When it comes to joining parts, quality is paramount. We operate under a stringent AS9100 certified quality management system. Maintaining complete material traceability is part of our process. Also, we verify client requirements before fabrication begins to ensure conforming products go out the door. Products SJTI fabricates are used in demanding environments, from flight to military and many things in between. We provide welding services to customers across a range of industries.

  • Aviation
  • Aerospace
  • Space-relate projects
  • Medical
  • Nuclear
  • Industrial
  • Maritime
  • Defense

SJTI is an AS 9100-certificated manufacturer. Also, we have National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program, or NADCAP, certifications for Non-Destructive Testing, fusion welding, and laser welding.

More Services Under One Roof

Upon request, SJTI can supplement resistance welding services with dependable surface nondestructive testing and visual examinations. Getting parts fabricated and assessed under one roof improves turnaround time while reducing costs.

  • Magnetic particle inspection, or MPI
  • Liquid penetration inspection, or LPI
  • Visual inspection, also called VI or VT

We utilize knowledgeable welding inspectors certified by the American Welding Society or AWS. SJTI also has NADCAP accreditation for LPI and MPI. Our highly trained NDT staff includes two technicians who’ve earned Level III certifications from the American Society of Nondestructive Testing, or ASNT, for MPI and LPI. A third technician is an ASNT-certified Level III for LPI.
