Fluorescent Penetrant Dye Inspection (PT)

Fluorescent Penetrant Dye Inspection (Penetrant Testing or PT) is a widely accepted inspection method used to detect surface cracks and defects in metals, ceramics and plastics. Penetrant Inspection will detect casting and forging defects, cracks and leakes in new products, and fatigue cracks on in-service components. Since May 2007, Superior Joining Technologies has been approved to ASTM E 1417 Standard Practice for Liquid Penetrant Inspection, and received NADCAP Certification in July 2008.

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MT)

Magnetic Particle Inspection (Magnetic Testing or MT) is a non-destructive method for detecting defects in ferrous metals. A magnetic field created with AC or DC current is applied through the material, causing distortion in the magnetic flow at a surface or near-surface flaw.

Fine magnetic iron oxide particles, coated with a fluorescent dye and held in a suspension liquid, are attracted to the distortion in the magnetic field in the area of the defect and hold on to the edges of the defect to reveal it as a build-up of particles. The photograph at right shows an airplane crank-shaft being viewed with ultra-violet light (black light) as part of the magnetic testing process. The zoomed-view shows the presence of fatigue cracks on the plate around the crank shaft.

Superior Joining Technologies received a five year certification on March 25, 2008, for approval to ASTM E 1444-05 Standard Practice for Magnetic Particle Testing, and received our NADCAP Certification in July 2008.

Brazing

Superior Joining Technologies serves our customers with the process of Torch Brazing.  Torch Brazing is a manual, high temperature process (900° F min) that is the preferred method for joining some assemblies that consist of tool steels, stainless steels, copper alloys and tungsten carbide using silver based filler materials.  SJTI produces precision assemblies for our customers in the Aviation and Aerospace industries, DOD, Electronics, Energy, Transportation and food processing.  These include both new fabrication as well as reconditioning of existing components.  We can process small quantity production lots as well as single items in conformity to Federal Specifications with FAA approved processes.

Laser Marking

Superior Joining Technologies provides Laser Marking and Laser Engraving with our new Trumpf Trumark workstation.  The new Trumpf Vectormark Workstation is truly a state of the art marking system with advanced programming capabilities and an integrated rotary axis providing the ability to perform full circumferential marking of cylindrical items.  We have the ability to perform custom laser marking on parts up to six inches in height with no restriction on the length.  Marking can be made as small as .1mm  -  (you will need a microscope to read it).

The laser has a diode pumped ND YAG power source providing optimum marking conditions on a wide variety of materials.  Among those materials easily marked are Titanium, Steel, Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Ceramics, and several Plastics.  Barcodes, 2D data matrix and custom art work such as corporate logos are easily generated and can be marked to customer specifications.

Marking titanium, steel and stainless steel is achieved by annealing the surface molecules of the material resulting in a lightly oxidized surface.  This type of mark does not disrupt the surface finish or change dimensions.  What we refer to as Laser Engraving is done with a different set of conditions that severely oxidizes the material up to a depth of .004” and is not affected by metal finishing processes that may be performed after marking.

Superior Joining Technologies is certified to and meets the requirements for NAS 410 for Aerospace, SNT-TC-1A for General Industry, and CP 189 for specialized non-aerospace applications such as pipeline and nuclear inspections. We are also an OP Specs Certified FAA Repair Station for Welding, and NADCAP Certified for Fluorescent Penetrant and Magnetic Particle Inspection.

Heading up our NDT operation is Joel Mohnacky, who has over five years experience in PT and MT and is certified to a Level III status.
