In celebration of our 20th Anniversary, Superior Joining Technologies is proudly sponsoring
"Robots: The Interactive Experience"
January 28th, 2012 - May 6th, 2012
at Rockford's Discovery Center Museum

Robots characters, from the 20th Century Fox animated feature of the same name, introduce visitors to the exciting and ever-expanding field of robotics. Immersed in genius inventor Rodney Copperbottom’s machine-populated world, visitors  assemble their own “Wonder-bot”, and take a virtual tour of robot vehicles.  This adventure goes beyond Hollywood and “reel” turns “real” with current and future applications of robotics in science and society. Students get riveted by science and mathematics as they design a robot probe for Mars, deep space, or ocean exploration; and program a robotic arm just like the ones used by Ford Motor Company. Visitors can pick up the remote to control a variety of different types of robots; and glimpse the companies and machines that are shaping the future.

Approximately 150 students boarded seven buses and visited 15 manufacturing companies on Tuesday, October 18, 2011. Students were screened for aptitude in science and math skills, making them good candidates for careers in engineering and manufacturing. These skills go hand in hand as much of what happens in a factory has elements of engineering, math, science as well as the manufacturing processes (or how is something made).

Companies that hosted these students included: Rockford Spring, MTE Hydraulics, Specialty Screw, Forest City Gear, Superior Joining Technologies, Energy Dynamics, Rockford Linear Actuation, Woodward, Ingersoll Cutting Tools, Danfoss, Rockford Toolcraft, SPX, Leading Edge Hydraulics, and Sundstrand.

Thom Shelow of Superior Joining Technologies said the students were very attentive and had great questions!

Superior Joining Technologies Wins Work from Poland

A sophisticated welding order for a company that will produce paper from raw pulp. 1930 individual welds were made to hold the tubes into the frame. The completed frame was delivered to Superior Joining Technologies on Monday morning and on Friday morning was being loaded for shipment to the customer. It took 2 fork lift trucks to hoist the finished product onto the flat bed truck to be delivered to the customer.

In June 2011, Superior Joining Technologies hosted a tour for 7th, 8th and 9th graders from a summer manufacturing camp. The summer camp exposes students to careers in manufacturing, modern machining and CAD/CAM technologies, quality and shop safety.

During the tour, the students learned about and observed TIG welding, micro-laser welding, laser marking, NDT processes, and watched a demonstration of the 5-axis, 3D laser cutting and welding center.

The area manufacturing camp, and now several others nationally and globally, grew from an original idea by Teresa Beach-Shelow as a way of exposing youth to the career potentials in the manufacturing fields. Teresa Beach-Shelow is one of three women who founded "Women of Today's Manufacturing", the not-for-profit organization that started the youth manufacturing camps.

Eligibility to receive and NTMA Safety Award Certificate is determined by calculating the number of injuries vs. the total number of man-hours worked in that calendar year.

Multi-Axis Laser Cutting and Welding Center

Superior Joining Technologies, Inc. is pleased to begin offering the service of Multi-Axis, Laser Machining and Welding to our region with the recent purchase of the 5000 watt TRULASER CELL 7040 from Trumpf.

With a working range of 13 feet X, 5 feet Y, and 30” in the Z axis, and maximum simultaneous axis speeds of 98 inches per second, it is the most advanced system of its kind in the Midwest.

With the ability to construct a cutting and welding program from a cad model, the prep time is greatly reduced.

The use of its integrated rotary axis makes processing of tubular components highly efficient.

Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge

The Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge was designed to accelerate commercial technological developments supporting the birth of a new generation of Lunar Landers capable of ferrying payloads or humans back and forth between lunar orbit and the lunar surface. Such a vehicle would have direct application to NASA’s space exploration goals as well as the personal spaceflight industry, including the Google Lunar X PRIZE competitors. Additionally, the challenge helps industry develop the operational capacity to launch quick turnaround vertical take-off, vertical landing vehicles, which are of significant use to many facets of the commercial launch procurement market.
